“16 To Life”, written and directed by Emmy-nominated Mid-Westerner Becky Smith,
will have its Kansas premiere at the Kansas International Film Festival on Sept. 19th.
The film will screen at 5:15pm at the Glenwood Arts Theatre, 95th Metcalf Avenue.,
Overland Park, Kansas.

The romantic comedy sees Nicholas Downs (Pearl Harbor, Constantine, Cold Case) who plays Bobby, the town’s young Deputy, overextending his authority to get all sorts of attention, particularly from his own mother; Louise, played by Theresa Russell (Black Widow, Spiderman III).
The star of the film, Hallee Hirsh (Grey’s Anatomy, E.R., 90210) is Kate, a rural American teen, who is turning 16 and has never been kissed. She works for Louise, the owner of the Float-On-Inn ice cream stand. All the while Kate and her best friend Darby played by Mandy Musgrave (South of Nowhere) race with time before the clock strikes midnight and will discover more about love than most 16 year-olds can imagine.
This is the first feature film from Emmy-nominated writer/director Becky Smith (Queer
Eye for the Straight Guy). “16 to Life” also stars, Jaime Gomez (Nash Bridges, Training Day), Carson Kressley (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy), Shiloh Fernandez (Gossip Girl, The United States of Tara) and Emily Foxler (Ghost of Girlfriends Past).
“16 to Life” was filmed entirely on location in Iowa with the support of local people who
served as cast and crew. Midwestern actors play strong supporting roles in the film,
including Ryan Gourley as Harley, Brendan Dunphy as Jordan and Rachel Salowitz as
Harley’s girlfriend.
“16 to Life” premiered nationally at the Los Angeles Method Fest this year, where it
received five nominations and won Best Film (Audience Award) and Best Supporting
Actor (Theresa Russell).
Director, Becky Smith and Cast member Nicholas Downs will be in attendance at the
KIFF screening, and will answer questions after the premiere. Both Smith and Downs are originally from Iowa.
The film set for “16 to Life” was built on the banks of the Mississippi River, and filming
took place over a three-week period in the fall of 2007. The film was one of the first to go
into production in Iowa under the tax incentive program. Governor Chet Culver visited
the set during filming.
