By: Darfur Fast for Life Those already committed to the September 21 fast include Don Cheadle, Mia Farrow, Sir Richard Branson, Pamela Omidyar, John Prendergast, Taylor Hanson, Shannon Sedwick-Davis, James Michael, and many more from around the world. WHAT: An International Day of Fasting for Peace and Justice in Sudan. The Darfur Fast for Life campaign is asking the global community to take the baton and join in a water-only fast as a personal expression of solidarity with the people of Sudan and a show of outrage towards the inaction from world leaders. WHEN: September 21, 2009; International Day of Peace and World Day of Fasting. WHY: The situation in Sudan is urgent: Nearly 3 million Darfuris living in camps face the threat of rape and aid cut-offs; the country's president remains wanted for war crimes and crimes against humanity; and a return to full-scale North-South civil war looms. The Obama administration and other world leaders must: 1. Lead a more effective and urgent peace process for Darfur 2. Build an international coalition for strict implementation of the North-South peace deal 3. Implement a policy that creates real consequences* NOTE: For more information on participating in the fast, visit Darfur Fast for Life’s website at http://fastdarfur.org. CONTACT: Gabriel Stauring – gabriel@iactivism.org - 310.415.2863 ABOUT THE DARFUR FAST FOR LIFE: We are leaders, activists and citizens around the world who fast in solidarity with the people of Darfur because they do not have a choice. We fast as a personal expression of outrage at a world that has allowed the suffering of millions of innocent people. We fast because as we simply watched, Darfur’s defenseless people were forced into wretched camps where today they are facing starvation and disease. We fast because those in positions of authority who know what is right and just, could and should do more to alleviate their suffering and bring peace, protection, and justice to the people of Sudan. We fast for Darfur’s courageous people —because we yearn for a world where human rights are respected and a life of dignity is the legacy for every man, woman and child. End
