Stephen Hankinson Group Chief Executive of Hankinson Painting Group, one of the UK’s largest Painting Contractors, is fully behind the move by major contractors to clamp down on unqualified site supervisors working for subcontractors.
The UK Contractors Group (UKCG), which includes 29 of the biggest companies, plans to start in early 2010 the vetting of supervisors and foremen to check they are properly qualified and passed the relevant safety and supervisory training.
Stephen Ratcliffe, director of UKCG say “we identified the need to tighten up the competence of supervisors to help improve health and safety. This standard is the means by which members will tackle the issue.”
Stephen Hankinson said “this is a significant move by the UKCG which we fully support. We have been committed to training and hold CSCS Platinum Status but there has been a trend in recent months to focus on price alone. This does not encourage sub-contractors to commit to training. This will now go some way to addressing the problem and can only be of benefit to the industry.”
