Sept. 11, 2009 - PRLog -- SGS invites you to attend a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Training Course with focus on the innovative ultrasonic testing method - Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD).

The training course will last 11 working days and will take place on November 17-27, 2009. At the end of the course, an optional examination can be taken which is in accordance with the SNT or PCN / EN 473 certification scheme. The exam will be carried out in the English language and will be conducted on November 28, in Shanghai, China.

Time of Flight Diffraction

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is an Ultrasonic Testing Technique (http://www.sgs.com/ndt-conventional-ultrasonic-testing) originally developed to increase the sizing accuracy of flaws previously detected by conventional NDT techniques. As TOFD has strong advantages in terms of safety, required inspection time and costs, it has replaced onsite radiography and become the most important method for flaw detection, accepted worldwide.

It is essential to educate NDT technicians about the correct and incorrect use of this test medium and the interpretation of results, as due to insufficient knowledge about the application of this new technology, flaws remained undetected, causing a general lack of confidence in the TOFD application.

PCN TOFD Training Course by SGS

The British Institute of Ultrasonic Testing (http://www.bindt.org/) developed a program, called the Personnel Certification in Non-Destructive Testing (PCN), which provides a reliable and cost effective method of satisfying NDT personnel qualification and certification and quality management systems requirements. The TOFD Training Course by SGS prepares candidates for the PCN examination for Levels 1, 2 and 3.

Candidates must hold PCN UT Level 2 Welds training in order to be eligible for this course. Beginning October 26, 2009, SGS can provide UT Welds training and examination prior to the TOFD course for candidates who need to do both UT Welds and TOFD.

The theory will be carefully explained using visual aids such as animated presentation material together with video projection of instrument displays. For practice examinations, SGS will provide a range of welded samples suitable for TOFD inspection.

All levels of Time of Flight Diffraction training courses (http://www.ndt-training.sgs.com/ndt-training-corp/ndt_tra...) will include data acquisition. In addition, Level 2 candidates are required to prepare a written instruction for a Level 1 candidate to follow for data acquisition on a particular sample. Level 3 candidates are required to create a procedure which includes a complete inspection technique. Throughout the duration of training, practical experiments and continuous assessments will be conducted to monitor the candidate’s progress and understanding of TOFD.

The course fee of USD 3,000 per person includes the training, examination fee and PCN levy cost.
