PRLog (Press Release) - Sep 10, 2009 -
The Resourceful Schools Program is a partnership between the CME, the resources sector, relevant education and organisation stakeholders, and 42 selected public and private schools from across Western Australia.

Students will benefit from tours of mining operations, visits to their schools by experts, invitations to special events and opportunities to access cadetships in relevant fields.

CME Chief Executive Reg Howard-Smith said the program would not only assist students, it would also bring long-term benefits for companies in the resources sector.

“Despite the current economic climate, all indications are that there will continue to be very strong employment opportunities in mining and energy over the longer term.

“The sector offers a vast range of career opportunities, ranging from semi-skilled and trades right through to professional and management positions.

“We believe the Resourceful Schools Program will assist in interesting young people in future careers in the sector.”

Schools were selected to take part based on five criteria:

•   success in forwarding their students to universities focusing on the sciences
•   success in forwarding their students to resources sector linked vocational education and training opportunities
•   working above and beyond to prepare their students for opportunities in the resources sector
•   regionally and geographically placed closest to the resources sector
•   working closely with under-represented groups in the resources sector, including women and Indigenous people.

To date 42 schools have joined the program, and it is expected to expand over time as more schools seek to access the benefits it delivers.
