DRAMATIC ART MEETS BODY ART AT THE 14TH STREET PLAYHOUSE
Atlanta residents Kat Reynolds and Colleen Hammond Whitmore will produce the world premiere of their co-written play “TATS:theexperience©”
Reynolds and Hammond-Whitmore explore the subject of tattoos with the same level of artistic care and loving attention to detail as one would expect and hope from a tattoo artist. Much as a body art specialist will indelibly etch their talent and skill into a person’s skin for many decades to come, these artists intend to etch their skill into our brains for many generations to come.
Body art is not new, but this play’s treatment of it as theatrical fodder is entirely unique and original. The play explores 16 characters (played by 7 actors) who have each experienced tattoos in one way or another. Through the use of multiple theatrical mediums, we learn their dramatic, tragic, and often humorous stories, and come to an understanding of what makes body art such a complicated and uniquely human art form.
Playwright and Producer Kat Reynolds is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a B.A. in Speech Communications and Drama. She is the Artistic Director for Speak It! Productions, LLC whose main focus is to bridge gaps between all art forms. As an actor, director, and writer she has been a member of the performance group Commediante Georgianni, Trustus Theatre's Apprentice Company, as well as a lead director for Life On Campus. As Director and Producer of the children's plays Storybooks, The Big Time, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Atlanta, Kat has created an art-based education for over one thousand elementary school students in the Atlanta area.
Director, Playwright and Producer Colleen Hammond Whitmore has served on the non-profit boards of Gilda's Club and Dad's Garage Theatre here in Atlanta. Colleen has given a voice to millions of college students across the country with her Life on Campus production. Others have found their right to be heard in her scripts: Words Forgotten, Bitter, and Bacon in the Closet. Expanding on her commitment to have all stories told, she has been personally involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Adopt-A-Grandparent and the Atlanta Woman's Arts Festival.
The show opens Thursday, October 15th and runs through Saturday, October 17th at the 14th Street Playhouse -- 173 14th Street, Atlanta, GA 30309 (Box Office 404-733-4738)
