This past spring, 100cameras ventured into our own backyard: the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We partnered with New Life, an inner-city community center that focuses on improving a child's education and plugging them into an extra-curricular activity that encourages positive construction of their character.
Joining this vision, 100cameras implemented a weekly photography class. Children were given cameras to document their perspective. They did. For three months, they photographed the details of growing up in the inner city.
Join us for a night to honor the children and hear their stories. On Thursday, September 24th, an exhibition of their photos will be launched in their own neighborhood at Whole Foods Market, on the corner of E. Houston and Bowery. Whole Foods Market is the official sponsor and host of the event. The photos will be installed in the store's new gallery space on the second floor beyond the café area. Light hors d'ouevres and beverages will be served as guests are invited to peruse the photography, eat, and purchase the art.
100percent of the funds raised from the children's photographs go back to the community center.
100cameras will specifically donate to the cause of literacy. Many of the students on the Lower East Side are significantly behind in both reading and writing. We want to give New Life more resources to help change that.
