In Southern California's not too distant past Los Angeles used to be the place to buy just about anything. If you wanted a good deal on apparel, furniture, jewelry, electronics or vehicles your chances were good that you would get the best deal in LA. However, this mindset is beginning to change. The ever increasing cost of transportation has affected prices across the board and cheap deals are becoming few and far between. Compounding this is the climbing sales tax rate. The current sales tax in LA county is 9.75% and higher than most other counties in the state.
Many Los Angeles residents are quickly learning that savings are to be had by crossing county lines. It is becoming more and more attractive to venture away from "the big city" to shop for major purchases. For example, if Joe or Sally LA wanted to buy a new vehicle from Infiniti they could save hundreds of dollars in sales tax by simply driving to San Bernardino County, where the sales tax is 9.0%, to make the purchase. If they purchase a vehicle for $40,000 they will save $300 in sales tax. If they purchase a $50,000 vehicle they will save $375. For residents who live in LA, Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead, El Monte, or West Covina the journey to savings is about 30 miles or less one way (east) on the I-10. Traffic allowing, a round trip to shopping destinations in Claremont, Montclair or Ontario could be made in one afternoon and for the potential savings it could be well worth the trip.
