ST LOUIS - The Cherokee Street Latino Business Owners Association is pleased to announce the annual Fiestas Patrias STL 2009 (Mexican Independence Day) celebration happening September 12, 2009 on Cherokee Street (Iowa to Oregon) from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Commemorating Mexico’s declaration of independence from Spain in 1810, Fiestas Patrias STL 2009 invites the St. Louis community to celebrate and recognize the national holiday of Mexican Independence Day.

This festival will bring the Mexican and Mexican-American communities together as they celebrate the rich heritage, history, and culture of their Mexican ancestors who fought for their independence from the Spanish government during the early 1800’s. The determination to succeed in seeking liberty, and correcting social injustices imposed by the Spaniards inspired Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla to proceed and execute his plans for revolution on September 15, 1810.

There will also be a mechanical bull, inflatable jumpers, and face painting. The event will also highlight the Traditional El Grito de Independencia (Hail of Independence), with special guests Mayor Francis Slay, Alderman Craig Schimd (20th Ward), Consul Roberto Caldera Arroyo (Mexican Consulate Kansas City), and many local legislators and other elected officials.

Along with the traditional festival food fare of hamburgers, Bar-B-Que, corn on the cob, hot wings and other delights, there will also be many food booths specializing in festive foods and many different culinary delights from Mexico. Food specialties like gorditas which are made from cornmeal, fried and then stuffed with fajitas, chicken, chicharones, beans and then topped with vegetables make it unique delicacy a must try meal experience.
