AMES, Iowa – Not everyone gets to experience the glitz and glam of Hollywood. Sometimes you have to wonder if the lights, cameras and action are all they are made out to be. Tyler Stafford can personally tell you, “Oh yeah!” The Iowa State University student, who is also a pitchman for ShavWet, a Boise, Idaho-based company, spent the summer interning for ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel.
Stafford just returned from a two and a half month stint in the City of Angels. “It was incredible,”
Stafford’s time in Hollywood was a far cry from life in Ames, Iowa. When asked if the experience was everything he thought it would be, Stafford says yes and no. “It was so incredible and was as much fun – if not more – than I expected. But the people in L.A. are much different than expected. Not like Iowa. In L.A., they are more laid back at work. My first day I wore a button down (shirt) and khakis (pants). A writer came up to me, looked me up and down and said ‘Khakis and a button down, huh? Big mistake.’”
As for how Kimmel is as a boss, Stafford says “I only met him once passing. He literally works the entire day. I would be just feet from him on a day-to-day basis. But he was working so hard, it would have been inappropriate to interrupt him.”
Stafford is now back at ISU where he is double majoring in advertising and speech communications. The now college junior started his internship with dreams of becoming a talk show host someday. After seeing what Kimmel does on a daily basis, Stafford now wants it more than ever. “My biggest challenge was not going crazy because I wanted to be on camera so badly,” Stafford says. “Watching everyone else do what you want to do is hard. It just fueled my fire to be on camera.”
For now, Stafford is content to finish school and concentrate on what he learned in Hollywood. “I learned how to be a more creative writer. I had a meeting with the head writers of the show and they recommended writing whenever you get a chance,” Stafford says. “I took that advice. It has also helped me start to think in a more creative way.”
You will be able to see some of that creativity in his next project for ShavWet. “I already have a new idea for a video that I can’t wait to get started on,” he says.
