There has been a large surge in the net usage among Europeans and Americans, thanks to the iphone. No other device has fuelled so such a large rise in internet usage. Earlier, the availability of sophisticated devices was the biggest challenge to the adoption of internet by mobile users.

With the advent of large screen phones with better interfaces, there has been widespread adoption of applications for various purposes by the users. Multi touch phones like the iphone have led to an increased demand for bandwidth among mobile networks. The iphone encourages the use of web by its easy interface and the availability of various applications that run using the internet. Software is also available to unlock iphone 3G.

Various rivals have unveiled their own versions of large screen phones. These support web browser technologies which allow the use of video, data and most other things that are possible on the desktop.

The report states that various other companies like Google and Palm are planning to provide functionality for running rich internet applications without the Flash and Silverlight plugins. The companies behind the development of Flash and Silverlight, Adobe and Microsoft, are also planning more advanced versions of these frameworks.
