Kansas City, Mo. – On Sunday, August 9th, Grantham University, http://www.grantham.edu, an online university specializing in educating working adults, participated in the 16th annual Susan G. Komen Kansas City Race for the Cure as a Silver Sponsor. In addition to the sponsorship donation of $10,000, Team Grantham, which consisted of employees and their families, raised an additional $615.
“Both of my grandmothers survived breast cancer and my aunt was a recent victim of lymphoma,” said Kelly Hunerdosse, educational technologist at Grantham University. “My mother, sister and I have participated in Kansas City’s Race for the Cure the past two years to support cancer research and to honor our family members. It is a great way to get involved with the community and help make a difference. It is truly awe-inspiring to see all of the people who are walking in honor of loved ones.”
This year’s race raised an astounding $1.2 million with the involvement of over 28,500 participants. With the funds raised at the 2009 Kansas City Race for the Cure, the foundation will give 75% back to the Kansas City community through their 2009 -2010 Grant Program and 25% to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Research Grant Program. Komen Kansas City’s local Grant Program funds not-for-profit, direct patient care providers for breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs.
Since 1993, Komen Kansas City has granted $5.3 million into the Greater Kansas City area for breast health education, breast cancer screening, and treatment programs. Komen Kansas City has also funded over $1.6 million for national breast cancer research.
About Susan G. Komen for the Cure:
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982 that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, they have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill their promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
