Healthy fat loss? What are you talking about? I thought it was all about weight loss. That's what most people would want you to believe. In fact the weight loss industry is such a huge industry that weight loss just seems like everyone should be doing it, right? WRONG.
Just losing weight is a silly goal. Allowing the scale to determine how healthy you are is insane. Consider this, if you cut off your arms and legs you would instantly weigh a lot less, right? Obviously that's not an effective weight loss strategy, but neither are the countless crash diets that are so prevalent today.
So what should we do? If it's not about weight loss, then what is it all about? It's about healthy fat loss. We should focus on having a healthy body fat percentage, not on how much the scale says.
To further that argument, BMI or Body Mass Index is also a very poor tool to describe how healthy a person is. There are body builders who have a very unbalanced measurement with regards to BMI and would be considered to be obese by that standard. The truth is many body builders have less than 3% body fat and are far from obese.
Let's make it simple. How about 2 things that you can do independently or in combination for effective weight loss.
1. Create a caloric deficit. Yes, this is an excellent way to lose fat. In fact, I've personally used this method over the past 5 weeks to lose an extra 14 pounds of fat. I've lost inches in my waist and neck, the two places I tend to store fat. This may sound hard, but you can google calorie counting tools and find all kinds of free ones to use. I personally use one called my-calorie-counter. It's 100% free and easy to use.
2. Exercise. No, not exercise! Yes, when you combine this with counting calories, you can quickly create a caloric deficit and lose fat in a very healthy way. You don't have to get crazy and immediately start running 20 miles a day or bench pressing 350 pounds. Nope, just get out and take a brisk walk for 20 minutes at least 3 times a week. Over time your healthy discipline will lead to more of the same. I started by just doing a few things at the gym and now really enjoy doing cardio and strength training.
So that's it for now. Please see my blog for more tips and tricks. Lose fat not weight!
