ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS - They say the novel is dying and by some accounts, the news is true. Some say that with TV, DVDs and MP3s, the death of the written word has already passed because people don't read. But one crafty 21st century writer found a way to use the emerging technology to bring his novel to a new generation.
The novel "Pookoo", by D.L. Shiloh (http://www.dlshiloh.com) mentions pop music from the 1980s. Makes sense, since it takes place in 1991. Think Billy Idol, De-Lite, David & David, as well as Steely Dan, The Rolling Stones and Derek and the Dominoes. The mix can be found at http://8tracks.com/
"This helps The Novel not just be a 2-D thing but come to life," Shiloh said. "Publishers are slow to change and this lets new readers into the door."
Shiloh worked as an educator and saw day after day how young people were "at a wall" with learning, reading old texts using paper books. "You add technology they understand along with an older form. It really brings it alive. You don't just read the tiles, you can hear the songs."
On top of this innovation, Shiloh offers the free download of his first novel, Pookoo, for a free e book download off his home web site.
Shiloh, who mentions music and movies extensively in his work, expects fans to use the songs to also create mixes across all platforms of the Internet, such as iTunes.
"If you know of an iTunes mix of Pookoo-mentioned songs, let us know," Shiloh added.
