ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS - The cover of "Pookoo", a satire by American writer D.L. Shiloh has a billboard that shows an Olympic athlete. One part of the book is about the rise and fall of the celebrity jock. But why is that lobster mascot also on the cover?
"That's the narrator, Pete Warner, dressed as Lenny the Lobster," Shiloh said, who once worked as a proofreader and even for a year as a restaurant mascot. "He had a good job but got downsized. Now Pete works a couple of crap part-time jobs to try to make ends meet and wonders how his life got to this point. It's tough times but there's a lot of dark humor."
So in honor of Labor Day (ironically, Shiloh once got laid off in time for Labor Day), http://www.dlshiloh.com is offering the free PDF download of POOKOO.
"It's frustrating, especially when no one's hiring," Shiloh added. "Especially when you've got skills or education or are willing to work. But just know joblessness doesn't have to be forever. I got laid off and divorced in the same spring and things turned around. It can get better."
Readers can even grab free Pookoo cover wallpaper for their desktop at the site.
