Europe is famous for its stunning architecture, fascinating history, innovative works of art and most of all, for its culture. The mixture of so many co-existing cultures makes Europe an incredibly diverse and captivating melting pot of traditions, experiences and languages. So much so, that it is home to 225 indigenous languages*, as well as a bevy of languages spoken by citizens from other countries.
For those who feel that this linguistic diversity is something to celebrate, the 26th of September will be at the top of their schedule. The somewhat recently established ‘European Day of Languages’ was originally intended as the finale of the Council of Europe’s ‘European Year of Languages’ in 2001, however, the day proved to be so successful that it was made an official annual event.
The European Day of Languages now focuses on an international celebration of cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as putting a heavy emphasis on language learning. The day seeks to impress the importance of language learning in education through various activities across over 40 participating countries, with a view to improving international understanding on both communication and business levels.
Bilingual skills are indeed becoming a significant advantage in the modern workplace. For those who dream of a more exciting career overseas, prominent gap year travel company Real Gap not only offer adrenalin-fuelled adventures, they also offer the opportunity to improve linguistic skills in a top European destination.
