Sober Living: What is it?

What is sober living? What are the ins and outs of a sober living community? What makes them successful?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Sep 07, 2009 – Sober living provides a transitional housing option for people who have previously completed drug or alcohol rehabilitation.  The facility is typically a group-type home which provides support to and for the residents, all who share the same common goal of resisting the pull of drugs and alcohol.  Sober living facilities are located everywhere and are generally reasonable in cost, providing an invaluable tool for those making the transition back into society.

Because of the nature of drug and alcohol addiction, an addict loses touch with healthy behavior and coping mechanisms required for daily life.  The addiction creates a new and dangerous pattern of behavior which eventually an addict accepts as a part of everyday life and adapts beyond normal coping mechanisms to deal with stress.  Drug and alcohol rehab facilities begin the process of reprogramming the mind of an addict to find and make healthier lifestyle choices that will foster recovery.  The process continues once an addict leaves rehab and continues throughout the person’s life, it takes great effort every day for a person to resist the lure of drugs and alcohol.

Sober living homes are very important and serve as an irreplaceable tool in recovery, once treatment is completed.  Once rehab is complete, a recovering addict still needs to be supported and nurtured, and they can get this need fulfilled within a sober living environment.  Most of the facilities are set up in an apartment-style or group home setting that is home to several other recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.  Many of these communities require a recovering addict to complete a 30-day treatment program before they will be allowed to reside in the facility.  There are several benefits to a living arrangement of this type which makes the facility ideal for transitioning back into society, while observing a new set of rules and lifestyle changes.

In sober living environments, an addict will share similar goals with the others; this will enable them to provide support and encouragement with like-minded people.  There are also staff members residing with residents to provide extra support.  When living in a sober environment, a recovering addict must submit to random drug testing, attend regular meetings, participate in sobriety-centered activities and abstain completely from using drugs and alcohol.  If the rules and regulations are disregarded or violated in any way, a person could face expulsion from the facility.

A person residing in a sober living facility will learn how to effectively cope with the stresses and pressures associated with moving back home again.  The transition from a treatment facility to the real world can be very intimidating, oftentimes as a recovering addict leaves the protection of the treatment center they struggle with resisting the seduction of drugs or alcohol.  As with any type of recovery process, whether it be detoxification to rehab programs, it is important to research and know all the facts before making a firm commitment to a certain facility.  With the right support system and a sober living environment, many people have gone on successfully to embrace sobriety and get back to living life once again.
