Sober Living Environment: A New Beginning

Looking for a sober living environment in which to continue on the path of recovery?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Sep 07, 2009 – Because of the need to have a safe and supportive place for people undergoing drug and alcohol recovery, a sober living environment came about.  The facility is meant to provide housing for people who have just completed a recovery program or completed rehab and need a place to live.  The movement can trace its roots to the west coast of the United States and has rapidly spread to other parts of the country.

Sober living environments provide other services than just transitional living; many of the locations are modeled around Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and take a page from accredited recovery programs.  Residents of the facility are required to take an active role in recovery meetings, submit to drug testing and show that they are committed to playing an active role in a long-lasting recovery.

Each sober living environment will have its own unique set of rules and requirements for residents; however many have the same basic principles and rules.  There is no drug or alcohol use permitted, mandatory attendance at counseling and therapy meetings, submitting to random drug testing, prompt bill payment and striving to be accepted by the fellow group members are all integral parts of the environment.

Because sober living environments are a relatively new phenomenon, there are no statistical rates or research to document success rates.  Many of the people who have resided in a facility of this nature have reported their stay to be an eventful experience and an important part of the recovery process.  A facility of this type provides the support and understanding that many people need to learn new life skills, embrace sobriety and maintain a commitment to staying sober.

Generally a sober living facility is a smaller residence-type dwelling.  The goal is to provide a recovering addict with the supportive treatment and recovery services to help maintain a drug or alcohol free lifestyle.  There are generally no medical, drug or alcohol rehabilitation services which are why these facilities work only after a substance abuser has completed a course of rehab and treatment.  The living environment shows a person how to go about daily life, free from the destruction of a substance or alcohol addiction.  Embracing a sober lifestyle helps a recovering addict to establish a new way of life that entails recovery and sobriety.  The person is supported and surrounded by others who share the same common experience and will provide much needed support and understanding.

For some people recovering from a crippling addiction to drugs and alcohol, returning to an old home environment directly after completing treatment would be a recipe for disaster, increasing the risk of relapsing back into addictive patterns and behavior.  The facility serves as a way to help those recovering to transition comfortably back into life while helping to maintain sobriety.  Being surrounded by a strong support network, attending regular substance abuse meetings and voluntarily pursuing activities to aid the recovery process allows many people to successfully combat an addiction and live normally once more.

If you or someone you love is in recovery from a drug or alcohol addiction, a sober living environment can help ease the transitional period back into normal life. Contact a facility today for more information.
