Dark Passions In Rural Spain - A Chiller For All Seasons

New book, Don't Miss The Fiesta!, reveals the perils that can lurk in an escapist's paradise when an Englishman seeks refuge in a Spanish village

Sept. 7, 2009 - PRLog -- Ever dreamed of escaping the urban rat-race, of finding a shangri-la far off the beaten track?
Once you have read David Baird’s latest book you may think again. In Don’t Miss The Fiesta! an Englishman takes refuge in a Spanish village — and finds himself embroiled in local feuds and hatreds.
Beneath the outwardly placid surface of the community sinister forces are at work. The stranger falls for an innocent local girl only to find the village has yet to purge its guilt over shocking events that occurred in the Spanish Civil War.
As Easter approaches, events move fast towards a chilling climax.
Baird is the author of a number of books, but Don’t Miss The Fiesta! is his first work of fiction. Born in Shropshire, England, but now based in Malaga, he insists: “The characters in the book are all figments of the imagination and the village of Benamargo does not exist.”
But he admits he found inspiration in true-life incidents.
“Some friends bought a remote Andalusian farmhouse and sat back to enjoy the simple life.
“But then came midnight knocks on the door and other strange incidents and they found they had become involved in fierce family feuds.
“It’s easy for a stranger to stumble into situations he does not understand.”
An award-winning journalist and photographer who has worked around the world, from Canada to Hong Kong, Baird has written a number of travel and guide books, including Sunny Side Up and Back Roads of Southern Spain. His book Between Two Fires, a poignant account of the impact of the anti-Franco guerrilla movement, won praise from historians Ian Gibson and Paul Preston.

Don’t Miss the Fiesta! is on sale at English-language bookshops in Spain or via the Internet (www.maromapress.wordpress.com). It is published by Maroma Press, which also published Between Two Fires.
