At the end of August, news broke regarding the expected release of Microsoft’s latest version of their Windows Mobile software, with version 6.5 set for its global debut on October 6th. Mobile carriers have been alerted to this breakthrough, with networks and suppliers set to update their products to support the latest software.

There are two significant new services to be added to the 6.5 software. ‘My Phone’ will allow users to synchronise their text messages, photos and content to the internet. Meanwhile Windows® Marketplace for Mobile is a new online facility to access mobile applications to adapt and enhance mobile handsets.

On the face of it, Microsoft’s latest enhancements are likely to improve the look and feel of mobile working. With a user-friendly honeycomb-style home menu, consumers will find this easier to work than a traditional grid layout. Web browsing will be made quicker and more efficient, with a touchable zoom slider allowing users to home in on pages and articles of particular interest.
Windows Mobile 6.5 is far from becoming a complete overhaul of the structure and platform of the software, but for an eye-catching facelift and continued reliability it is a step in the right direction. Microsoft have admitted that there is no opportunity for handsets currently on sale to receive official 6.5 updates, yet dedicated 6.5 mobiles are set for release this Autumn.
