Back pain is the No2 reason for long term sick within UK offices, whilst in manual jobs it is the number 1 reason. Back pain problems costs UK employers £624 million per year which also means that 4.9 million working days are lost due to back pain. On any one day, 1% of workers are on sick leave due to back problems
Bearing in mind that the NHS spends approx. £1 billion per year on back pain related costs and the Private Health sector spends over half of this amount, how can massage alleviate back pain?
Massage increases blood circulation & boosts nutrients at area of pain as well as stimulating the production of endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers). Massage has been proven to provide intensive stress relief and lower depression & anxiety. It relieves the build up of tension to ensure a better sleep pattern and can therefore re-energise tired & exhausted bodies. With loose muscles, range of movement improves and posture is enhanced.
The beneficial effects of massage last at least one year after a 6-week course of treatment and since 90% of sufferers recover within 6 weeks, Massage is recognised as a legitimate method in fighting back pain.
