Charlotte, N.C. Let's face it, when it comes to interior design, many of us have the aptitude for decorating, while others are, well let’s just say, creatively challenged. If you fall within the latter category, all is not lost. I encourage you to take it slow, approach one room at a time and select a few key areas at a time that you will commit to focusing on before starting the next project. In no time at all you’ll have your entire house redesigned just the way you like it.
To get the ball rolling, here are a few creative ideas and tools that I applied during a recent design project. Some of these tips may help solve design problems you are being faced with.
1. Use beautiful, interesting well crafted items throughout the space. Little pockets of surprise are captivating and reveal your thoughtful attention to detail.
2. Purchase an area rug that's soft, textural and the appropriate size. Not only is it visually appealing but it also feels very inviting underfoot.
3. Place like colors throughout the room for proper balance. For example, use the same fabric for throw pillows as you do for drapery panels.
4. When using vivid and bold colors in furnishings and accessories, paint walls in a neutral tone to serve as a restful backdrop. Don’t let your walls compete with the rest of the decor for attention.
5. When selecting a dining table for a tight space, measure the area correctly. Allow two feet clearance from the wall to table edge. For the appropriate distance pull the chair away from the table and leave plenty of room to move around.
6. One of many seating combinations is to place a solid sofa with two adjacent side chairs in a fabric pattern. Purchase extra patterned fabric to make throw pillows for the sofa.
7. Don't hesitate to mix patterns in multiple sizes and shapes in the same room. Geometrical patterns typically represent transitional and contemporary styles
8. Replace framed art with fun colorful vinyl wall decals that adhere directly to the walls. Installation is easy and they have a semi-permanent bond. Decals are very cost effective and are artfully crafted.
9. Blinds in a rich wood stain help filter light and add warmth to a large space.
