Nominations for the 11th Annual Native American Music Awards (NAMA) were announced by The Native American Music Association & Awards, reflecting the combined votes of the NAMA Advisory Board Nominating Committee.
Jan Michael, who won the award for Flutist of the Year in 2008, received honors in three categories – Artist of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Instrumental Recording for his recent release, “The Looking Wolf Project”, which combines authentic alternative rock with his trademark Native American Flute playing and vocals. Recorded by renowned producer Keith Sommers with combined efforts from GRAMMY Winning song writer George Noriega ‘LWP” is Jan Michael’s fourteenth release and has been making some waves in the music industry. “What an honor to be part of this amazing recording”, Sommers smiles, “Jan Michael’s flute playing is amazing and his vocals really knock it out of the park.”
In addition to nominations for ‘The Looking Wolf Project’, Jan Michael shares a very special nomination with the legendary Floyd Red Crow Westerman in the Best Music Video category for their music video from the Legend of Tillamook’s Gold feature film.
Westerman who passed on in 2007, is well known for both his acting and musical accomplishments with roles in several major motion pictures, including Dancing with Wolves.
Jan Michael conveys gratitude, “I can’t thank everyone enough. It is just a gift to be able to share music and healing. The Looking Wolf Project CD took over a year to record; we really put our hearts into it.”
Also joining the ranks of the nominees this year are honors for Benjamin Running Boar Grimes, a long time close friend and flute student of Jan Michael’s. Ben is nominated as Debut Artist of the Year for his CD “Truth”.
Public voting to determine the winner of each category has now commenced and is open to the general public. Anyone interested in voting can visit the Awards websites (www.nativeamericanmusicawards.com)
