PRLog - Sep. 2, 2009 - ELK GROVE, Calif. -- How does it happen that 31 years ago a young man from Hayward, California decided to produce pageants? One would need to go back some 40 plus years to get the answer. In the 1970’s the California State Fair each year crowned the Maid of California. Among its winners were former screen beauty Raquel Welch. Each county fair would crown their fairest of the fair, or Maid of the county and send their winner to Sacramento to compete for the state title- Maid of California. It was during those early years between 1960 and 1970 that the Lameira family would attend the Alameda County Fair, and part of their day would be to watch the Maid of Alameda County Pageant. Mrs. Lameira seemed to enjoy pageantry, so the family would of course tag along and enjoy the rides, cotton candy, exhibits and the county beauty pageant. Year’s later Frank Lameira’s niece would be crowned Miss Fresno County. The seed was planted. “ I could do that, said Frank Lameira and thus a pageant dynasty in California became from humble beginnings. Lameira founded a company with a friend and named it Danfranc Productions, a combination of their first names. Local pageants they produced throughout the late seventies and eighties included the Miss Alameda County, Miss Bay Cities, Miss Richmond, Miss Oakland, and Miss San Francisco Pageants. It was in 1980 that Lameira decided to embark on a venture that would grow by leaps and bounds, the Miss Teenage California Pageant. It wasn’t that way in the beginning however. The first pageant had 8 contestants with one day prior to the deadline. Talk ensued about canceling the event, but on the final entry day 14 more contestants entered and thus the Miss Teenage California Pageant was born. 31 years later the state pageant has become the largest and most popular teen pageant in the state if not the nation. There is no swimsuit competition, as it was eliminated in 1990. The judging categories for the competitors are Achievements & Activities, Personality, and Poise and Presence in Formal Attire. Many of the state winners and most of the contestants are first timers, say’s Lameira. That is what makes the program unique. No experience is necessary, and everything that is required of the contestants stage-wise is taught to them over pageant weekend. We are seeking good girls, who are involved in school and/or community, and who have a desire to one day attend college. Winners and contestants have been of all ages between 13 and 19.
