Lead actress Hallee Hirsh, Becky Smith and actor Nicholas Downs promoted the film via TV, radio and newspaper interviews leading up to the screening. Hirsh, (You've Got Mail, Flight 29 Down, 90210 - and perhaps best known as Rachel Green in E.R.) plays Kate, a confused 16- year-old trying to deal with her sexual awakening in a small town. Downs (Pearl Harbor, Constantine, The Girl Next Door, Cold Case) plays Bobby, an over oppressive small town cop with quite the chip on his shoulder, mad about the fact that his mother (Theresa Russell) won't sell the ice cream stand she recently inherited from her mother and use it for more lucrative purposes like a paint ball court or storage sheds. Theresa Russell (Spiderman III, The Black Widow) plays Kate's boss and mother substitute.
In the romantic comedy Kate’s angst about her sexual inexperience drives a comic quest for love and understanding on a birthday to end all birthdays. Before the end of the night, Kate and her best friend Darby will discover more about love than most 16-year-olds can imagine.
The Daily Iowan says “16 to Life” emanates “a feeling of realism” and calls Hirsh’s performance, “spectacular”
