The International Youth Theater was formed in the summer of 2008 in Northwest Indiana - just outside of Chicago.
It was the inspiration of local businessman, baseball coach Kurtis Kintzel and his son Joseph Sky Kintzel, who at the ripe old age of 13 had already performed in 15+ local stage and variety show productions.
Since birth, Sky followed the footsteps of his two older sisters Sandra and Sarah as they performed song and dance throughout most of their childhood. Sky continued his natural evolution in 2008 by engaging the challenge of directing a production of "Into The Woods, Jr."
Turned down by nearly every local theater house because of scheduling conflicts and/or the disbelief that a 1st time producer, and 1st time director that was only 13 years old could pull it off, Kintzel and Kintzel found a banquet facility, El Nopal, in Michigan City, Indiana with a stage, lighting, etc. and most importantly availability, which was all but donated for practice and eventually the shows!
As for the story... When a Baker and his Wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, deceiving and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red Ridding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk!)
With unforgettable roles, little dancing and no chorus, Into The Woods Junior showcases a medium-sized ensemble of talented singers and actors, where each performer shoulders an equal weight. The sophisticated score has been adapted to make it easier - though still challenging - for young performers.
Into The Woods Junior is a funny and engaging way to get young people to think about the stories with which they've grown up and the ethical issues raised therein.
Per Kurtis Kintzel, "I did it to spend time with and create something with my son and that was my win!" Ask the audience and they'll tell you the producer and directors debuts made an enjoyable event for people of all ages.
