Self proclaimed world’s first Deafblind DJ, Mike Gerwat, has launched a sponsored slim in a bid to reclaim more of the life he once loved.
Mike, who celebrates his 60th at the end of August, is working with staff at Leeds Society for Deaf and Blind People to shed half his weight down to an ambitious 15 stone.
Having shaken hands with the likes of John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Genesis and Sir Paul McCartney, Mike aka The Big MG, has always lived for music.
Born completely blind and after losing his hearing in his thirties, Mike lived for a whole decade without music.
Since developing a keen interest in technology, he has gradually rebuilt his life using cochlear implants and special computers. Together with a great musical memory Mike was able to reclaim his passion for music and became the world’s first Deafblind DJ.
Now embarking on the final chapter of his mission to reclaim his life The Big MG, who currently weighs 29.4 stone, is focused on losing weight in the name of charity and achieving another significant personal goal.
Mike said: “The sponsored slim is a very important task for me. When I lost my hearing I thought I had lost everything, but I was determined not to give up. I have achieved so much by partially regaining my hearing through technology, however I still suffer from physical and mobility problems and feel restricted by my weight.
“I was always so active in my younger days and I really miss exercising and going for walks. I want to live my life to the full and remain independent for as long as I can and I will only do that if I act now and start to shed this weight.”
Mike is the vice chair and acting treasurer of Leeds Society for Deaf and Blind People.
Lindsey Wilson, fundraiser at Leeds Society, is one of the team members taking part in the sponsored slim event. She commented, “Mike is a true inspiration to the Deafblind community and has an enviable talent in the world of music, as well as technology.
“Anyone who has dieted before will know how difficult it is to stay focused and we hope people will sponsor Mike to encourage him to continue his hard work in rebuilding his life. Dedicated and passionate, Mike is proof that whatever life throws at you, it is always possible to turn things around.”
