In August Sony released the first official information on the brand new PS3 Slim which is scheduled for released worldwide at the beginning of September 2009.
The video game industry was delighted with the announcement of the brand new PS3 Slim, many developers felt that the time was right for an updated model of the famous console but more importantly that it needed a price cut. The PS3 was always the most expensive games console on the market and it really struggled because of this despite the fact that it included a blu-ray player as standard. Retailers also began to complain about the price point and also a lack of hardware to boost their sales which had slowed continually as time had passed. Finally consumers had already rejected the PS3 because of it's price had said that they could be tempted to invest in one if there was a significant price cut. With all these considerations in mind, Sony announced the brand new PS3 Slim.
The PS3 Slim is pretty much identical feature-wise to the original; it still contains the blu-ray player but upgrades the hard drive to 120GB, reduces the size, power consumption and noise that the console makes. At a brand new price point and scheduled for release at the beginning of September, Sony looks set to see a huge increase in the number of sales of their games console. It could be seen as a make or break move for the PS3 itself as Sony made heavy losses on the original PS3, so with the significant reduction in size perhaps their manufacturing costs will have reduced allowing them to finally make some profit on it. The new price point has been set at $299 in the US or £250 in the UK, these are the standard prices available respectively in these countries and there are no plans from Sony to release any special bundles.
The PS3 is available from the beginning of September and is available now for free.
