Aug. 30, 2009 - PRLog -- The contemporary, figurative paintings and drawings of John W. Carlson will be exhibited at the Chicago Art Matrix Gallery in the Zhou B Art Center this September. Rumors of Greatness: New works by John W. Carlson will open Friday, September 18th from 7-10 (show runs thru October 11, 2009).

A native of Ashtabula, OH., John W. Carlson currently resides and works in Bay Village, OH.

Always artistically gifted, John began his career as an artist by attending Cleveland’s Cooper School of Art. Inspired by the works of Egon Schiele, Franz Kline, Edward Hopper and Lucien Freud, John strives to find a balance between expressive drawings and boldly executed paintings.

John often combines traditional oils with alkalids, charcoal and graphite. Working mostly on large canvases, he freely applies his medium without sacrificing subtle emotional details. This method allows him to control the negative space, which is vital to the ambiguity that runs through all of the work. What appears to be a gentle gesture to some can appear violent or passionate to others.

“In all of my work I search for the core, that center of the thing, the emotional DNA if you will. That thing which we respond to individually but are ultimately all connected by” John W. Carlson.

John's work has been featured in the Butler Institute of American Art and has been acquired for the permanent collection of the Erie Art Museum. His work can be viewed online at http://www.carlsonstudio.net.

Located in the city’s Bridgeport area at 1029 W. 35th St. on the south side of Chicago, the Zhou B Art Center is an impressive, 87,000 sq. ft. showplace for international contemporary artists. The center features open galleries and studios at the popular “Third Fridays at the Center” as well as providing live music and offering menu items at it’s new Zhou B Café.  The Bridgeport area is often described as the Soho of Chicago.
