The DVD players were imported by and sold at Wal-Mart stores across the country, all of which were manufactured in China. It seems that it is easy for the media players to overheat and potentially burn consumers. In fact, it has been reported that a number of the DVD players caught fire from becoming overheated. In total, Wal-Mart has been notified of at least 12 cases in which these DVD players have overheated and caused potential danger to customers. Five of the media players reportedly burst into flames and resulted in damaged property. Approximately one and a half million DVD players are included in the recall for these defects.
Black & Decker coffeemakers have also been included in a separate recall because of their potential to cause burns and other injuries as well. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that Applica Consumer Products, Inc. is recalling these coffeemakers because they can potentially melt and cause severe burns. It is already incredibly dangerous for coffeemakers with scalding hot liquid to overheat, but to melt in addition to overheating poses a serious burn hazard for consumers. So far there have been no injuries reported to Black & Decker or the retailers that sell their products, and they are urging their consumers to stop using the defective coffeemakers immediately to avoid any future injuries. The retailers to whom Black & Decker sold the defective coffeemakers include Wal-Mart and a number of small retailers between April 2008 and July 2009. Black & Decker is providing a free replacement coffeemaker to all who contact their company about the defective product.
Fire and burn injuries are some of the worst that can be sustained by a person. These injuries are incredibly painful and can take a very long time to fully heal, if that is even a possibility. There was another recall earlier this year in which a certain brand of bathrobes was found to be flammable. Bathrobes are, according to federal standards for inflammability, supposed to be flame resistant. These bathrobes, however, did not meet these federal standards. As a result, at least six victims died of severe burn injuries when their bathrobes burst into flames.
