Young boys and girls learning to curl and playing in the Little Rocks Division need head protection on the ice. It's not always possible to make them keep on a helmet, so coaches are making the Ice Halo mandatory.

"The kids love to curl - there's just something about sliding on the ice with big heavy stones! But they also have a very carefree attitude and this can lead to some pretty nasty falls. We can't risk these kids heads any longer. Most of the boys toss their helmets as soon as they get on the ice and generally, at least one of them falls over the course of the game. Serious concussion ranks as a number one injury during curling games. The curlers feet slip out from under them so fast there is no way to stop from falling down very hard. Unfortunately, the slip continues past just a had landing on the behind, and generally stops with a solid crack of the head impacting on the ice.

The violent jarring of the head impacting on the ice causes concussion.  Concussions can lead to serious complications at the outset - blurred vision, nausea, dizziness, headaches to name a few. These symptoms can continue for a very long time, or they may even be signs of hemoraging, clots, or even stroke.
