ID Theft Reporter/Analyst Provides Valuable Information to Help Others Avoid Becoming a Victim

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the nation, claiming nearly 10 million victims in 2008—that’s a new victim every three seconds. Award-winning journalist Karen Cavanaugh contributes her years of experience to IDTheftQuiz.org as part of her mission to educate others on the risks of identity theft and provide readers with tips to help them protect their identities, their finances and their reputations.

Before becoming the new voice and face of IDTheftQuiz.org, Ms. Cavanaugh worked for daily newspapers The Palm Beach Post and The Tallahassee Democrat. Ms. Cavanaugh’s five-year battle as an ID theft victim began with a notice from her bank saying her checking account was in the red. That’s when she learned her personal information had been used in Sacramento to buy Star Wars memorabilia; in Newark to pay for car repairs and in Tampa to open a utility account.

Ms. Cavanaugh will be writing about ID theft prevention and protection, as well as the risks of massive data breaches, viruses and the techniques ID thieves use.
