Follow on Google News | Seddon Training Centre Expands OfferA state-of-the-art training centre, operated by national painting and maintenance contractor J & S Seddon, has been selected as a location for the delivery of a pioneering new course in heritage work.
By: Jane Shepherd The course - developed for experienced decorators - marks the start of a nine month long programme of training and assessment towards an NVQ Level 3 in Heritage Skills. Tuition in Conservation, Restoration, stencilling, gilding, graining, marbling and wallcoverings will all be included and delegates from as far as Surrey and South Wales have already signed-up to the programme. A spokeswoman from Birmingham-based Ann Cook Associates Limited said: “We have selected J & S Seddon’s training facility as it is centrally located and the facilities are ideal for the course. “Next year, English Heritage will encourage contractors who work on their estate to use individuals who hold a Heritage Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), so it is an important development for the industry.” This is the latest success for the team at J & S Seddon’s Centre of Excellence. Opened in 2007 with a million pound investment, the complex was initially developed to facilitate J & S Seddon’s own training programme. It is now one of the first company-based centres in the UK to offer nationally-accredited NVQ training and assessment, following a rigorous application process earlier this year. The venue is now being increasingly used by the wider community for training delivery, including health and safety courses for smaller contractors. It also recently played host to a regional heat of the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year award, which attracted apprentices from across the Midlands area. Clare Winter, Johnstone's specification marketing manager, said: "Johnstone's and J & S Seddon have worked together for many years, so we were delighted to be able to further strengthen our relationship by partnering with the company to host the Central West regional heat of the 2009 Johnstone's Young Painter of the Year competition. “The training centre at J & S Seddon’s premises is extremely impressive and we would be pleased to return there for a heat in 2010 competition. "The aim of the Johnstone's Young Painter of the Year competition is to give students across the country the opportunity to showcase their talents and the facility was an ideal venue for the competitors to do this."
