Consumers Need Safe Alternatives To Lap Banding

Lap banding has enormous impact on patients lives and not always in a good way. Why is the government looking to fund this through an already beleagured health system instead of putting resources into exercise, nutrition and lifestyle education?

Concerned by the complications and lack of support some of her personal training clients who had undergone lap band procedures were experiencing, personal trainer and business owner of Babes on the Run, Justine Guest has produced the Babes Weight Loss program to give women thinking about this procedure a viable alternative.

Feedback from clients highlighted a lack of support and education from surgeons and left some patients with the feeling of not being fully aware of the impact lap banding could have on their quality of life.  Many also mentioned the impression that not all their weight issues had been dealt with.  Add to this is the huge range of diet and coaching products on offer and you end up with so much conflicting information promising a wide range of outcomes with little in the way of results.

“People need to be educated about the reality of living with a lap banding procedure. It has many good points but understand the negatives can impact your quality of life.  Speaking with clients that haven’t been able to eat a proper meal in months and when they do eat, they’re not really sure what they should be eating. Surgeons encourage kilogram weight loss and not the building of lean muscle mass to get the metabolism working. They are effectively just putting clients on very low calorie diets and reducing the amount of food their patients can eat. This isn’t sustainable for the rest of their lives, doesn’t address calorie expenditure and hasn’t begun to help clients work through any food related issues. The actuality is this procedure is hard work, hard on the body and requires drastic change in diet to get results” says Guest.

Guest ensures that Babes Weight Loss Program addresses a wide range of issues specific to many women looking to lose weight in one simple program.  She has endeavoured to make the program accessible to a wide range of women looking for professional results based personal training programs that are affordable, social and outdoors.

“Our Weight Loss program has been designed so the Trainer is working with each client in some way almost every day. This ensures we can stay in constant contact and offer on-going support instead of retrospectively trying to analyse what is happening in a clients’ life” says Guest. “Clients benefit from us working with them on all aspects of their lifestyle instead of just getting them moving for a few hours a week or putting them on a diet.  This program changes lives and is the type of program the governments need to be looking at subsidising.  Let’s get people out of the overcrowded hospital system and save some money.  The cost of one procedure alone would give access to the Babes Weight Loss program for over a year”.

Included each week is Wellness coaching to address underlying issues, Babe Squad boot camp training and 1-on-1 Babes Personal Training.  Clients also benefit from the proven 6 week Revitalise weight loss and nutrition package by renowned nutritionist Jo Beer. Educating clients to prepare healthy, nutritionally balanced meals has helped many overcome food concerns.

“It was important to us to have this Weight Loss Program focus on the clients’ needs and to balance that with the benefits that women get from connecting with each other.  We just don’t put our female clients through a ‘run-of-the-mill’ program on a machine that was designed for men in a room full of people she doesn’t know. Even in our small groups, Babes Trainers know each and every client personally and we take great pride in getting results for them” says Guest.

“Weight loss just happens to be a wonderful side effect of living well and being active. It’s so much easier when you know what to do and have ongoing support.” said Ms Guest.
Guest also advises clients to be careful about thinking they have tried everything as many weight loss programs and gyms aren’t designed for their success but to make money.
Lap banding can drastically alter lives both for the better. Guest advises that before you take any kind of drastic action that you do your research.  Contact and meet up with Lap Band support groups and ask the difficult questions like ‘given a choice, would you do it again?’. Find out as much as you can before committing.

Babes Weight Loss programs offer support, understanding and most importantly, safe weight loss results for the long term.  Guest believes this is the way to go in dealing with our obesity epidemic.  "Most people have little to no understanding of what their body needs and why - how are they supposed to learn if education isn't available?" says Guest.
