Ranking in Sierra Club’s ‘Cool Schools’ List Adds to ‘Green’ Honors for CSU, Chico

California State University, Chico has added to its national standing in sustainability and environmental programs by ranking 34 on the Sierra Club’s “Cool Schools” list for 2009.

Aug. 25, 2009 - PRLog -- The college rankings, titled “A Comprehensive Guide to the Most Eco-Enlightened U.S. Universities,” were published in the Sierra Club’s Sierra Magazine September-October issue. The rankings rate schools in nine categories, including energy efficiency, waste management and transportation policies.

The Sierra Club ranked 135 colleges and universities in the U.S. on its Cool Schools list. The University of Colorado, Boulder, was ranked number one in survey. CSU, Chico was the only CSU campus included on the list.

Prior to 2009, the Sierra Club had published top 10 Cool School lists for two years. In 2008, CSU, Chico made the list of four honorable mention schools along with Yale, Carleton College and Unity College.

This month, CSU, Chico is also featured in The Daily Green Web site’s “12 of the Greenest College Cafeterias” story, available at http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/latest/gr.... Last year, the Web site profiled CSU, Chico in its “10 of the Greenest Colleges of America” story.

The University has also received national honors for sustainability and environmental programs from the New York Times and the National Wildlife Federation, and made top green college rankings from Kiwi Magazine and Grist, an environmental news Web site.

CSU, Chico has garnered regional and national attention for a variety of sustainability and environmental initiatives. The University was one of the first signatories of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment to reduce campus greenhouse-gas emissions. The student-led Green Campus program and its adviser, geography professor Mark Stemen, have both won awards for their efforts on behalf of sustainability and energy efficiency. The University’s “This Way to Sustainability” conference is the largest of its kind in the country. The College of Agriculture’s organic dairy is the first university dairy west of the Mississippi.
