Follow on Google News | Community Discovers Membrane Based Treatment SolutionsWhen it comes to receiving laurels for environmental design innovation, the Laurel Cove Golf & Country Club, in College Grove, Tenn., has to stand near the top.
By: Bord na Mona 1,000 acre planned residential community features a state of the art Bord na Móna PuraM® Membrane Bioreactor wastewater treatment system that makes maximum use of every drop of water.Bord na Móna was awarded the $1-million contract by Tennessee-based Adenus Technologies in October 2007. The installation was completed in April 2008. The plant was designed to treat a Phase One flow of 250,000 GPD and to achieve a final effluent quality of 10 mg/l BOD : 20 mg/l TSS : 10 mg/l TN. What’s more, the design allows the final effluent to be used as a supply for irrigation water on the development’ The wastewater treatment system installed at this high profile mixed use development incorporates the Bord na Móna enhanced air scour flat plate cassette design, that reduces complexity, and operational input, a significant benefit for decentralized treatment works. The PuraM system treats wastewater to reuse standards and can be used for irrigation of the golf course. The design allows for phasing that can expand the capacity of the works to meet the future needs of this dynamic new community. The PuraM wastewater plant is comprised of two treatment streams each designed to handle up to 125,000 GPD. Each stream has an anoxic/equalization tank and PuraM Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) tank. The system includes 18 flat plate PuraM membrane cassettes. Consideration was made in the design to allow for complete ease of upgrading the system in future phases for flows up to 1,000,000 GPD. The anoxic/equalization tanks were designed to permit future conversion into PuraM MBR tanks. While the Laurel Cove development marks the first U.S. installation of a PuraM treatment system, similar PuraM systems are already in place in Europe, where Bord na Móna’s parent company is headquartered. PuraM is a pre-engineered wastewater solution that achieves high quality effluent within a greatly reduced overall footprint. The PuraM MBR is engineered specifically for the decentralized municipal, community and commercial wastewater treatment market with an emphasis on reliability, reduced operational input, ease of maintenance and less complexity than comparable systems. PuraM is based on flat plate ultra-filtration membrane technology assembled into stainless steel membrane cassettes. The cassette consists of a unique integral dedicated air diffuser assembly that eliminates the need for backpulsing or frequent chemical cleaning. The system does not require permeate pumps or any site installed chemical dosing system while achieving a typical time between recovery cleans of approximately 12 months, significantly better than comparable systems. Adenus Technologies, headquartered in Smyrna, Tenn., provides turnkey wastewater solutions for regional systems, subdivisions, and commercial properties that are both environmentally and functionally sound. Adenus offers a portfolio of technical solutions to solve a variety of wastewater needs. Their focus is to determine the most appropriate solution for each project and then assume the responsibility of owning and operating that system in perpetuity. Bord na Móna is a multi-national $550-million provider of state-of-theart, environmentally responsible wastewater, water reuse, and air pollution treatment solutions for homeowners, communities, and municipalities. The company is forging a new contract with nature through innovative solutions focused on conservation, re-use, material recycling, and chemical reduction.
