In its continuing effort to green up its products, GM has turned to its full-size pickups: the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado and its twin, the 2010 GMC Sierra. GM's efforts have wrung an extra mile per gallon out of each truck both in the city and on the highway, putting them at the top of their class in fuel economy.
Last year, when the 2009 model-year Silverado and Sierra debuted, they were achieving a measly 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. Even the XFE (eXtra Fuel Economy) models were only pulling off 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. To improve these figures, GM set its engineers to work under the hood to free up a little more fuel efficiency. To be completely accurate, though, the only traditional wrenching done was actually performed under the bed, where GM's engineers swapped out the old differential for a new, lower 3.08:1 gear set.
The rest of the work was done with a computer, adjusting the shift-points on the six-speed transmission, playing with the valve timing, and tweaking the Active Fuel Management system to keep the engine running on four cylinders instead of eight more of the time. All these little tweaks to the computer programming, along with the new gears out back, helped the Silverado/Sierra pick up 1 extra mpg in both city and highway driving, for an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway on the 2010 models. Even the XFE models got a boost in highway fuel economy, up to 22 mpg for 2010. And of course, if you need more, there's always the Silverado/Sierra Hybrid, which will net you an impressive 21 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.
Those who actually use their trucks to haul things will be happy to know that all of GM's tinkering hasn't affected the truck's capabilities. Horsepower, torque, payload, and trailering abilities remain unchanged on the 2010 models. All the power and better fuel economy? Sounds like a win-win to us.
For reference, the 2010 Ford F-150 achieves an EPA-estimated 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway when equipped with the 5.4L V-8 and 15 mpg city, and 21 mpg highway when equipped with the 4.6L V-8 and the six-speed automatic transmission. The 2010 Dodge Ram, meanwhile, gets a Ford-rivaling 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. Foreign competition is even farther behind, with the 2010 Toyota Tundra getting 14 mpg city and 18 mpg highway with its 5.7L V-8, and 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway with the 4.6L V-8. Bringing up the rear is the 2009 Nissan Titan (2010 specs haven't been announced yet), whose 5.6L V-8 is only good for 13 mpg city and 17 mpg highway, though running it on E85 Ethanol will get you 1 extra mpg on the highway.
