Michael Phelps, 23 of U.S. set a new world record with his astonishing eight gold medal performance at Beijing 2008 Olympics games. With his 100m butterfly victory he set a new world record of wining most gold medals in one Olympics games. Michael beats the previous world record of seven gold medals set by Mark Spitz in the 1972 Olympic Games, which were held in Munich, Germany, by winning eight gold medals at Beijing 2008 Olympics.
Phelps began his attack on the Beijing 2008 Olympics games with a bang. He won the Men's 400m Individual Medley on second day of the games event in a world record time of 4:03.84, wedging 1.41 seconds off the old mark. He won his second gold in the 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay. This was just the beginning and Phelps got his third gold for the Men's 200m Freestyle final on day four, which broke the world record by almost one second with a record time of 1:42.96.
Victory with the Men's 200m Butterfly final on fifth day took Phelps' gold medal count to four and he set another world record - 1:52.03 in his pet event. His tryst with gold medals continued on fifth day with another gold medal in Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay. His team set a world record of 6:58.56 and broke the previous seven minute record. Phelps' very next gold was for Men's 200m Individual Medley on seventh day with a new world record of 0.57 seconds.
As anticipated, the Men's 100m Butterfly on eight day gave Phelps his seventh gold medal. His final eighth gold medal came with a comfortable win in the Men's 4 x 100m Medley Relay on ninth day.
With his magical gold medals Phelps received the best swimmer of the meet from FINA, the sport's governing body.
