Many individuals and businesses have always purchased their personal computers from a well-known provider to pre-conceived specifications. Increasingly, however, many are turning to specialist PC providers to custom build a PC to their own personal specification and budget. Rather than simply coughing up for a standard mass-made PC, it might well be better to consider the alternatives and so we asked Paul Redford the managing director of Computer Planet, who specialise in custom built PCs and high performance PCs, to dispel a few industry myths.
Mass-made PCs are popular as people know exactly what they are getting. Why would anyone want to custom build a PC?
“Mass-made PCs are not built to an individual specification and so they often contain hardware or software that a user never intends to use as part of the overall ‘package’. Conversely, many customers end up buying upgrades and extras to their PCs as standard models don’t come with everything that a user needs. By custom-building a PC a user can pick the specific components that they want in order that their PC only does what they need it to do.”
It stands to reason that a mass-manufactured PC will be cheaper than a custom-built model. Is this true?
“No, that is far from true. The beauty of being able to customise a PC yourself is that you can leave out expensive components that you know you are not going to use. If you aren’t intending gaming on the PC, why buy a mass-market model with costly integrated graphics cards when you can opt to leave it out on your custom made PC and spend the saving on something you will actually make use of?”
Mass-made PCs contain well-known components by trusted manufacturers so I know exactly what I am getting. Is this true of a custom built PC? How do I know the bits will all work together?
“We only use a range of tested, quality products in all our PCs. We have a wide range of experience in building PCs from scratch and every one of our computers is rigorously tested prior to delivery. We also make sure the various components have a valid warranty should there be any unforeseen problems.”
Computer Planet offers a range of custom built PCs and high performance PCs. The Manchester based company can also custom build PCs for businesses. For more information, visit http://www.computerplanet.co.uk.
