Most people have no idea what the Windows registry is but it is often the source of sluggishness and frequent program errors and crashes. The most common myth that prevents people from learning about or taking action to correct registry problems is that this is what computers do as they age. Nothing could be further from the truth. In this article, I'll tell you a little about registry cleaning and show you some free resources that will help you get your computer running like it was new again!

I know of a few poor souls who constantly reformat and reinstall Windows in attempts to keep their computer running well. This works because they're starting over with a clean copy of the registry, but it's a temporary fix. Eventually the sluggishness and crashing returns as the registry problems are recreated. Why does this happen, and what can you do about it?

You need to know a little bit about the Windows registry to understand what happens over time. Essentially, the registry is a database that contains information vital to the operation of the computer hardware, Windows itself and the programs you have installed and running. As you use your computer, installing new programs, uninstalling old programs, adding and removing accessories, this database fills with useless information. This shouldn't happen; unfortunately, software and hardware makers a usually quite lax in writing their installation and uninstallation routines and fail to clean up after themselves.

The most effective way to fix this is to do a registry scan and fix it manually; however, this is a very time consuming and potentially dangerous approach. Messing up even a single entry can cause fatal system errors. An easier, more sensible and safer approach is to use a registry cleaner program. These programs will go through your registry and fix whatever is broken so that you don't have to. Moreover, the chance of these programs causing any damage is very low compared to doing it manually.

If you're the technical type, or just curious, you can learn all about the registry in the Windows Registry Wikipedia entry, but beware - it's full of technical details most people don't want or need to know. I recommend you check out the Registry Risk report below and use that to decide whether to do your own registry cleaning, or to use a registry cleaner program.
