On 13th July 2009 Health Secretary, Andy Burnham, launched the Government's consultation for dealing with the rising cost of care home funding and the post code lottery that exists in terms of support and benefits. With the over 80's being the fastest growing demographic within our Country, this is a problem that is not going away.
The Government have made three proposals, the most controversial of which is compulsory insurance for all costing between £17,000 - £20,000 per person. The other two options are a partnership approach with a quarter of funding being paid by the state and a voluntary insurance scheme with the state paying a quarter but higher premiums of £20,000 - £25,000 per person.
The consultation ends in November with a white paper setting out the results and conclusions due early next year so watch this space.
