William Wilberforce Day- important new African-American holiday, this Monday, August 24th

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug. 22, 2009 - William Wilberforce (1759-1833), was a British Member of Parliament, and  a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. Wilberforce passed his Abolition Bill before the House of Commons in England in 1807. This is one of the most important events in African-American history. August 24 was his birthday.

This holiday has recently been accepted by Chase’s Calendar of Events and will appear in their next directory. The official holiday is a result of the efforts of Professor Rick Sheridan of Wilberforce University to recognize the achievements of this important person.
