In the high fashion world we recently saw Madonna model for Louis Vuitton, and in January 2009 51-year-old former model Inès de la Fressange proved she could still walk the runway.
We often forget that every person we see in TV adverts or magazines is a model, hired specifically for that project based on the clients’ specifications. And it’s abundantly clear that not all of these people are catwalk models.
Leading modelling agency Models Direct is a case in point. Every day the agency is contacted by clients including photographers, TV production companies and advertising agencies, all looking for models to feature their projects. And they are just as likely to ask for mature, middle-aged or senior models as they are to request young adults.
There are a number of reasons for this, but the key point to remember is that marketing works when viewers or readers feel a sense of identification with the people who are featured in it. “Sometimes a client or art director will want to appeal to a certain demographic, for example in an advertising campaign, so they will ask for an older model,” comments Damian O’Connor, MD of Models Direct. “At other times they are simply trying to portray a mix of people in the photo shoot, both young and old.”
Shaun Pratt from Buckinghamshire is 48 years old and decided to sign up with Models Direct a couple of years ago. He was picked from a selection of models for a photo shoot in the stylish Aspers casino in Northampton.
Shaun loved the experience. “I found the whole experience fantastic,” he says. “Not only do you get paid for a great job, you also get to meet new people, which is so interesting.”
As the years go by and family commitments become lighter, people often find they have more time on their hands. Becoming a model with an agency such as Models Direct could turn out to be a great way to have fun, meet new people and earn some extra cash into the bargain.
