NEWBURY PARK, CALIF.--The Miller Family YMCA in Newbury Park is launching its Trailblazer program for fathers and their kids. The official kick-off will be Sunday September 13 at the Miller Family YMCA (Paraíso shopping center, Via Las Brisas in Dos Vientos) from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fathers and their kids will learn about Trailblazers as well as have the opportunity to play in the indoor pool and take part in a lively game of "inner tube water polo." The event is open to the public. Free food, tours of the YMCA facility and a chance for someone to win a three-month membership are also on tap.
Trailblazers are part of the YMCA's Adventure Guide Program and is designed for fathers and their kids in fourth through sixth grades. “I'm looking forward to Y-Trailblazers. With the kids older now, activities such camping at Catalina and white water rafting on the Kern River should show my kids that dad is still cool to hang out with," says Steve Hoffman, who is a new Trailblazer dad.
“One of the greatest gifts a father can give his child is quality time spent together. It’s a very rewarding one-on-one experience that leaves a wonderful, lasting impression,”
Trailblazers meet one evening per month from September through June. Six to eight pairs of fathers and sons or fathers and daughters meet together for 60 to 90 minutes. The meetings typically begin with a discussion of recent experiences. Every child participates. The group then plans future events and activities. Meetings close with a short activity, game or craft that the group completes together. Activities range
from simple handicrafts to longer road trips exploring unique locations and
participating in special events.
