With North American businesses starting to believe that the end of the recession may be in sight, many managers’ thoughts are turning to hiring. With current high unemployment levels, hiring managers are hoping that a glut of people in the job market will translate to a wide choice of inexpensive candidates for the positions they are hiring for.
‘Not so’ says Robert French, co-founder of the Employer Help Center. He believes that a glut on the job market does not automatically mean there is an availability of good candidates. ‘The current job market is inflated by the layoffs that have occurred over the last year or so,’ he explains. ‘However, when companies lay people off, they usually lay off their least effective employees and keep their high performers. This means that the percentage of high performing people in the job market is actually less than when the economy is stronger.’
Using bulletin boards and services like Monster and Craigslist will not, French believes, provide the sort of candidates that employers are looking to hire. ‘Employers need to be focussing their efforts on finding the best possible people,’ he says. ‘Unfortunately no one is telling them how to go about finding, attracting, interviewing and hiring the best talent available. It was to help with this problem that we started the Employer Help Center.
