Aug. 17, 2009 - PRLog -- CHARLOTTE, NC - The local chapters of the US Green Building Council (USGBC), Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW), CoreNet Global and the Town of Ayrsley announce Charlotte’s first event focusing on the USGBC’s newest rating system – LEED® Neighborhood Development (LEED® ND), set to launch this month.

“As Charlotte continues to grow, we must make deliberate planning choices that will leave a sustainable legacy and improve our region’s appeal,” said Hunter Fleshood, Senior Vice President at Bank of America Corporate Workplace, and Chair for the event.

The August 19th event in Ayrsley will focus on educating the various players in the world of real estate on smart growth, urban development principles and green building for neighborhood development projects that protect and enhance the overall health, natural environment and quality of life of communities. “As developers are encouraged to build neighborhood projects, these same communities must also reduce auto dependence and provide jobs and services that are accessible by foot, bicycle and public transit. It is a tall order, but it must be done, and this event will showcase some lessons learned and valuable insight from internationally acclaimed leaders on the subject,” says Brian Bumann, RA, LEED® AP and Chair, USGBC-Charlotte Region Chapter.

The day includes a tour of the Town of Ayrsley, which will provide the “classroom” for experiencing the pedestrian and environmentally friendly philosophy behind Ayrsley’s development. Also scheduled are keynote speakers Sophie Lambert, Director of LEED® for Neighborhood Development for the US Green Building Council and Auden Schendler, Executive Director of Sustainability for the Aspen Skiing Company.
