Classes run from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Students receive the certificate required in New Jersey to operate a power vessel or personal watercraft (PWC). LACKAWANNA SQUADRON OFFERS BOATING COURSE
Lackawanna Sail & Power Squadron will teach America’s Boating Course, a safe boating course approved by the State of New Jersey. The class meets on four Tuesday nights, starting on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at the Montville Township Public Library. Classes run from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The course is designed for all boaters, power and sail. As boating is often a family activity, all members in a family are encouraged to attend as a group.
Subjects include: boat handling under normal conditions; adverse conditions and emergencies;
The course meets the standards of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, and features a proctored examination as required by the State of New Jersey and many insurance companies.

The mission of LSPS is to promote safe boating.
LSPS teaches courses on boating safety to the public at the Montville Township Public Library. In the America’s Boating Course, students receive the certificate required to operate a power vessel or personal watercraft in New Jersey.

LSPS teaches advanced boating courses to its members. Topics include seamanship, coastal navigation & marine GPS, celestial navigation, marine electronics, engine maintenance, sail, weather, and cruise planning.
There are over 150 members of LSPS. The members of LSPS reside chiefly in Morris, Union and Essex Counties. This year the officers are Rich Pfaff (Montville), Steve Cohen (Summit), Kevin Wanner (South Orange), Meg Smith (Chatham), Maureen Medure (Morristown)
About half of LSPS members own boats. The boats are located in New Jersey (from Toms River up to Liberty Landing), New York and Connecticut.
Approximately half of LSPS members are sailors, and half are power boaters.
Every year LSPS has two membership meetings, a festive officers' installation, and a holiday party.
LSPS has its monthly Executive Committee meetings at the Madison Community House.
LSPS members have raft-ups of boats in Raritan Bay and in Barnegat Bay.
LSPS members cruise together, often going through the East River to Long Island Sound and then beyond.
LSPS members obtain boat insurance at discounted rates, with discounts that increase as additional courses are completed.

FAQ - THE NEW JERSEY MANDATORY BOATER EDUCATION LAW
Question:
When do I have to complete a boating safety course and receive a boat safety certificate?
Answer:
If you are operating a personal watercraft (Jet Ski, Wave Runner, etc.) on the waters of the State of New Jersey you are required to possess a New Jersey boat safety certificate.
On and after June 1, 2008, all power vessel operators born in 1949 and later have been required to possess a certificate. On and after June 1, 2009, all power vessel operators, regardless of date of birth, will be required to possess a boat safety certificate.
Question:
I plan to operate a jet ski. Do I need to take a course?
Answer:
All persons operating a jet ski (personal watercraft) must have taken a course and have a NJ Marine Police certificate. Persons under 16 years of age may not operate a Jet Ski.
Question:
I heard that an “experienced boater” may not have to take a course but merely pass an exam is this true?
Answer:
This program finished on May 31, 2008.
