UK Everest Challenge 2009 Now Just Hours Away, Nearly!
UKEC'09 is a compact, dedicated and non-profit endurance event team - proudly fundraising and fully backed by the following beneficiary charities; • Help for Heroes [2 out of the 3 guys in the team are ex-marines] • Children with Leukaemia [Team member Bryn Posey father died of Leukaemia] • National Association of Crohn's & Colitis Disease [Team member Darren Edwards has been diagnosed with Colitis/Crohn's] •
In a mad dash of blisters they aim to complete their goal within a short four or five days. You can visit our fundraising site at www.ukeverestchallenge.com, read why they are doing the event in detail and get some background.
UKEC co-founder Darren Edwards states "It is easy to get wrapped up in all the hype and stress of setting up an event of this type. You sort of drift off planning and training. The emails we get however ground us.
When some gives you £10 donation, a discount or a bit of kit and then explain why, those thoughts stay with you. Recently a gentleman donating reminisced about his son that had died of Cancer at a very young age, heart wrenching, but certainly inspiring. A few days of pain in our own bodies, verses some of the conversations with people who have lost loved ones is incomparable. Even team mate Bryn himself understands what it is like to lose a parent to Leukaemia, it sure puts perspective on life when you see it through others eyes." Team member Bryn Posey's motivation is clear "We are not saints or do gooders, we are just normal guys with goals in life, this challenge being one. But I have to tell you it has certainly changed the both of us, opened our eyes to what goes on outside of the box. It's very weird to see yourself and others lives under a microscope."
Their strong fundraising efforts have just pushed passed the £4,000 barrier and they will be blogging online and updating through social networking sites and twitter all next week. Even a last minute Swine Flu problem striking down one of the support team runners, has not dampened their spirits or enthusiasm.
