Maderas Sostenibles was formed in 2007 to reforest degraded pastureland in the Pacific Coast region of Nicaragua in the Department of Rivas. The Company’s initial plan was to partner with landowners to reforest spent pastureland with tropical hardwoods, including teak, mahogany, and royal cedar. The company's Pacific Coast operations include both the planting of hardwoods and the sustainable management and maintenance of standing forest.

In late 2007 a Category 5 hurricane, struck the RAAN, the northeast department on the Atlantic side of Nicaragua. Felix destroyed the existing tropical forest and the fragile local economy. MSSA immediately began investigating the feasibility of harvesting the fallen hardwood and reforesting in the hurricane zone. MSSA representatives met with landowners, community leaders, and government officials. In January 2008 Maderas Sostenibles began operations in the Rosita area of RAAN. The Company built a forestry camp and tree nursery, succeeded in two annual harvests of the fallen wood with its mill and processing plant. The company is processing the hurricane salvage wood and exporting it as sawn lumber, flooring and decking. MSSA is partnering with local landowners to harvest the hardwood and reforest the effected area.

Maderas Sostenibles will continue extracting the fallen lumber for 3 more years reclaiming as much as possible by processing and exporting exotic hardwood products such as decking, flooring, S4S lumber, and rough cut timber. Nicaragua's Tropical hardwood Species include Ipe, Jatoba, Mahogany, Andiroba, Cumaru, and many others. Export clients have received shipments in Europe, USA, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and many other countries.

The company continues its dedication to sustainable forestry in Central America and reforestation of deforested areas with its tree farm holdings. The company's 500 acres of tree farms include Teak, Mahogany, Spanish Oak, Spanish Cedar, and many other exotic species. The fight to end the destruction of forests in Nicaragua is just beginning and there is abundant opportunity for reforestation and sustainable forestry in this Tropical Central American country.
