REEApartments has compiled an apartment hunting list for new and potential renters. The goal of this list is to give new renters a helpful resource when searching for a new living space. This is the first of a three part series made to assist renters in making a well informed and smart decision.
1. Renters should remember to sort through their priorities before going apartment shopping. Consider the following factors, and determine which are the most important to you. This includes, but is not limited to: quality of neighborhood, rent cost, square footage, public transportation, etc. Remember to determine “what’s important to me”.
2. Make a list of apartment complexes that might fit the desired qualities. An internet search is useful as well (www.reepartments.com has apartments throughout the Twin Cities and St. Paul Metro). Record the name of the complex, the full address, and the phone number. Leave room for notes. A spreadsheet in excel can be perfect for this, plain old pencil and paper works as well. In addition, there are websites that allow you to compare property information side-by-side. It's important to start off organized because oftentimes people explore several complexes at once, and it's easy to get confused ("Which one had the double sinks in the bathroom? Which one was right by the highway? Did I visit this one already?"). A few tips:
o When driving around potential neighborhoods, be sure to put on the hazard lights as apartment searching requires many stops and slow driving. Stop and look for a phone number or website address, or if it's convenient, go directly to the rental or leasing office if they're open.
o Remember to visit websites which advertise apartment complexes and listings, the internet is becoming an increasingly useful resource – use it.
